MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- Aug. 29, 1998 -- Vivus, Inc. presented data on the efficacy of Muse(R) (alprostadil) when used together with Actis(R) at the International Society of Impotence Research (ISIR) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, showing that, during home treatment, 75 percent of administrations of the combination resulted in sexual intercourse. In a multicentre study presented by Ronald Lewis, MD, of the Medical College of Georgia, the use of an adjustable penile constriction band (Actis) to block venous outflow in conjunction with the use of Muse resulted in 102 of 144, or 71 percent, of patients reporting successful sexual intercourse. During home treatment, 75 percent of administrations of Muse plus Actis resulted in sexual intercourse. Erections lasted approximately 25 minutes. The average study patient had erectile dysfunction of moderate to complete erectile dysfunction. Vivus launched Actis in the United States in July, 1997 for the treatment of Venous Leak Syndrome. It has been suggested that for many patients with erectile dysfunction there is an associated disorder of the veno-occlusive mechanism. Disorders that interfere with the corporal veno-occlusive mechanism result in the failure to trap blood within the penis. Venous leakage prevents the storage of blood and therefore an erection cannot be maintained. The use of Muse plus Actis is currently under clinical investigation in the U.S. Muse consists of a proprietary, non-invasive drug delivery system that delivers pharmacological agents via the urethra.
