MELBOURNE, Australia -- June 17, 2008 -- The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved Panvax, an avian influenza vaccine. Panvax is intended for use in the prevention of influenza caused by a pandemic strain of avian influenza virus.

Three randomised, double-blind clinical studies were conducted in Australia to assess the immunogenicity and/or safety of the vaccine in adults aged 18 to 64 years, and older adults aged 65 years and older. The vaccine, administered as a 2-dose regimen, was found to be safe and well tolerated.

Panvax is a vaccine that can be used only when an influenza pandemic has been officially declared by the Australian Government in consultation with the World Health Organization.
