TORONTO, ON. -- October 6, 1997 -- Bayer Inc. today announced the launch of the Glucometer(R) DEX(TM) blood glucose monitoring system, now giving Canadians with diabetes a more accurate and efficient measurement tool with better control over the testing process and the convenience of a multi-test system. Glucometer DEX is the only self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) system available that allows people with diabetes the ability to test 10 times in a row through a unique self-calibrating 10-test cartridge. The disc-shaped Glucometer DEX houses the 10-test sensor cartridge, completely eliminating the need to fuss with individual test sensors. When 10 tests are completed, another cartridge is simply popped into the meter, making the process of blood glucose testing easier and more convenient than ever. According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 1.5 million Canadians have been diagnosed with diabetes and it continues to be a leading cause of death in Canada. As insulin was discovered more than 75 years ago, many people assume diabetes has been cured. The truth is diabetes is inadequately controlled in Canada. In fact, four out of every 10 people with diabetes will eventually develop serious complications such as blindness, heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and amputations. "We have increasing evidence that controlling blood sugar levels will help to prevent diabetes-related complications," said Dr. Lawrence Leiter, staff endocrinologist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. "We recommend that all persons with diabetes monitor their blood glucose levels regularly to help control their blood sugar." People with diabetes often complain that current blood testing procedures are inconvenient. Glucometer DEX offers a range of unprecedented convenience and efficiency features to help people with diabetes get a handle on their blood glucose levels. These include:
