By Robert Carlson Special to DG News DALLAS, TX -- May 6, 1999 -- Bicycling-associated sexual and urinary tract dysfunction has been reported in male bicyclists. Two new studies released at the American Urological Association meeting in Dallas yesterday show that women and children can suffer similar injuries. Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine said that trauma to nerve bundles that run through the pubic area can result in urinary and sexual dysfunction in both males and females. The study of women cyclists was conducted by mail with questionnaires completed and returned by 282 female members of a large cycling club. Controls were 51 members of a running club who said they did not ride bicycles. The mean age in each group was 40 years, and subjects in both groups were matched for weight, smoking, hypertension, cholesterol levels, body-mass index, education, race and frequency of sexual intercourse. Only 11 percent of the women were competitive cyclists, but 32 percent of all the cyclists said they had experienced trauma from the bicycle top tube, said Irwin Goldstein, MD, Professor of Urology, Boston University School of Medicine. Among the subjects who reported those injuries, 44 percent said they had experienced swelling and/or bruising, 19 percent reported hematuria/dysuria, 34 percent felt perineal numbness after the injury, 1.8 percent had a urethral stricture as a result of the injury and 1.5 percent had a pelvic fracture. Urological trauma in children was also blamed on accidents involving the bicycle top tube, accidents that can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction in adulthood, the researcher said. Eighteen men who complained of erectile dysfunction (mean age 37 years) reported that they had suffered blunt traumatic perineal injuries while riding bicycles as children. The mean age at the time of the accident was 11 years. Five of the eight men had been hospitalised as a result of the accident. Only two of the 18 had been dirt-biking or stunt biking at the time of the accident. One man said the trauma had resulted in painful urination/hematuria and 10 said the result was perineal numbness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 1999 P\S\L Consulting Group Inc.
