PHOENIX -- July 23, 1997 -- Researchers report dramatic results following a clinical study which shows near-eradication of the bacteria that cause acne, clearing up 99.9 percent in six weeks. The study was published in a July supplement to the Journal of Dermatological Treatment. The study participants ranged in age from 18 to 50 and had moderate to severe facial acne. Each patient was given a twice-daily, 100mg dose of Dynacin(R), an oral minocycline antibiotic, and a twice-daily application of Triaz(R) 6% gel, a special topical benzoyl peroxide treatment, both developed by Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation. After three weeks of treatment, the average level of P. acnes bacteria, the primary cause of inflammatory acne, was reduced by 99 percent. After six weeks, a 99.9 percent reduction in was achieved. "The reduction in P. acnes in this study exceeded that recorded in nearly every other similar study undertaken," said Eugene Gans, Ph.D., Chairman of Central Research for Medicis. "After looking at our data and talking with our consulting dermatologists, all of whom are leading acne authorities, we've found it to be one of the most significant reductions in this bacteria that has ever been seen." Moderate to severe acne is not a problem confined to the teenage population; it also afflicts millions of adults. If left untreated, it can lead to serious and permanent scarring. Previous scientific studies have failed to find an effective weapon against the bacteria that provoke acne lesions. Medicis is an independent dermatology company, offering prescription, non-prescription, and physician-dispensed treatments exclusively for skin conditions.
