TORONTO -- August 26, 2008 -- Health Canada has approved Zostavax for the prevention of shingles in individuals aged 60 years or older. The approval is based on results from the Shingles Prevention Study that included 38,546 participants aged 60 years or older. The vaccine reduced the risk of developing herpes zoster by 64% in people aged 60 to 69 years compared with placebo, and by 51% for all age groups. The vaccine also reduced the incidence of severe and long-lasting zoster-associated pain by 73% compared with placebo. Among vaccinated individuals who developed zoster, the vaccine reduced zoster-associated pain by 22% compared with placebo. In clinical studies, the most common side effects reported were redness, pain, swelling, itching, warmth, and bruising at the injection site. The vaccine should be available sometime in 2009.
