LEXINGTON, MA -- June 3, 1998 -- New data presented by Irwin Goldstein, M.D., professor of urology at the Boston University School of Medicine, at the 93rd annual meeting of the American Urological Association held in San Diego, further confirms the safety and efficacy of MacroChem Corp.'s Topiglan, a topically applied gel for treating erectile dysfunction. Dr. Goldstein reported that in this new study of 114 patients conducted at Boston University, Topiglan achieved response rates of 80 to 90 percent, with no significant side effects. "Topiglan differs from other erectile dysfunction treatments in that it is a topical gel that is applied directly to the glans, thereby minimising the potential for systemic side effects," he said. "It is comprised of alprostadil, an agent that is already approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and Sepa(R), a patented drug delivery technology which permits the drug to be absorbed through the surface of the skin. "It should be noted that alprostadil is a naturally-occurring substance that is present in male semen.
