TORONTO, Dec. 2, 1996 -- Nurses will be able to play a greater and more effective role in the health care system of the future through new research, Health Minister Jim Wilson announced today at a speech to the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. A five-year, $1.75 million grant will go to McMaster University and the University of Toronto to operate the Nursing Effectiveness, Utilization and Outcomes Research Unit. "I'm counting on the new research to help government develop policy," Wilson said. ``For example, it's going to tell us how many and what kind of nurses we need, the knowledge and skills nurses should have, and how registered nurses and registered practical nurses can work better with other health care providers. "This is necessary groundwork to make sure we can continue to meet patient needs today, and in the future and provide higher quality patient care." The McMaster/University of Toronto research centre has been government funded since its inception in 1991. It is internationally recognized for its research into improving the quality of nursing work life. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 1999 P\S\L Consulting Group Inc.
