NEW YORK -- August 26, 2008 -- The German health authorities have approved an expanded indication for Alutard SQ to include the prevention of the development of asthma. The approval by the German authorities is based on 10-year follow-up results from the Preventive Allergy Treatment (PAT) study -- a randomised study including 205 children conducted in 5 European countries. Results from the study showed that the vaccine reduced the risk of developing asthma by approximately 50%. The preventive effect is sustained 10 years after initiation of treatment. "This is exceptional news for both children and adults allergic to grass, rye, or tree pollen who may prevent their disease progression and reduce the immense burdens of asthma," said Claus Bachert, MD; Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic; University of Ghent; Ghent, Belgium; and German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology, Munich, Germany. "In addition, the societal benefits of fewer children with asthma are potentially enormous. No other existing medical treatment available has been documented to prevent the development of asthma and this is the first time ever that any therapeutic regimen has achieved this indication."
