CHADDS FORD, PA -- December 21, 1999 (PRNewswire) -- Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc. announces the introduction of three new strengths of the pain relief medication Percocet(R) CII (oxycodone HCl and acetaminophen tablets, USP) -- Percocet-2.5/325 (TM), Percocet-7.5/500 (TM) and Percocet-10/650 (TM). The original Percocet(R) formulation contains 5 mg oxycodone HCl/325 mg acetaminophen and will now be known as Percocet-5/325(TM). The new products are now available in pharmacies nationwide.

"For over 20 years, Percocet has been well established for a wide range of pain relief," said Carol A. Ammon, President and CEO of Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc. "This expansion of the Percocet line to include three new dosage strengths reinforces our company's commitment to providing a variety of safe and effective pain management products."

Percocet was the first oxycodone/acetaminophen product available on the market and is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. With the introduction of the three new dosage strengths, Percocet now offers the most choices of any oxycodone/acetaminophen combination on the market. The new Percocet dosage strengths also represent both the lowest and highest strengths of this oxycodone combination currently available. They are available in bottles of 100 and in hospital blister packs of 100 tablets.

"The three new strengths will give physicians greater flexibility in prescribing Percocet and to adjust the dosage to pain severity and specific patient response," said pain expert John T. Farrar, MD, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA.

Research shows that 75 percent of current Percocet prescribing is above the usual recommended dose for Percocet-5/325(TM) of one tablet every 6 hours.(1)

"In this era of more aggressive pain management, there is a clear medical need for higher doses of oxycodone, the active ingredient in Percocet," Dr. Farrar said. "In addition, Percocet-2.5/325, the new lower oxycodone formulation, could be an attractive option when the other combinations may be too potent, such as for minor post-op procedures or for use with elderly or adolescent patients."

The original formulation of Percocet (5 mg/325mg) was recently switched from a white tablet to a blue tablet to enable this strength to better fit into the expanded line of Percocet tablets.

Percocet was launched in August 1976. There are more than 500 reported uses of the product for relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. Approximately 9.2 million prescriptions for Percocet were written in 1998.(2)

"Physicians now need to remember to 'specify the strength' when prescribing any of the four Percocet formulations for their patients," Endo's Ammon said. "Endo Pharmaceuticals is actively working with physicians and pharmacists to ease the transition from one Percocet strength to four and to provide patients with the Percocet formulation that best meets their needs."
