NEW YORK -- September 22, 2008 -- The Danish Medicines Agency (DKMA) has approved alitretinoin (Toctino) for adults with severe chronic hand eczema unresponsive to potent topical corticosteroids.

Pregnancy is a contraindication to alitretinoin therapy and strict pregnancy prevention measures must be in place for all women of child-bearing potential who receive alitretinoin.

In clinical trials alitretinoin was well tolerated and has a safety profile overall consistent with the retinoid class. Side effects were generally dose-dependent and reversible.
