FORT WASHINGTON, Pa., June 30, 1997 -- Imodium Advanced (2 mg loperamide HCl, 125 mg simethicone) has been cleared for marketing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of diarrhea plus gas (bloating, pressure and cramps). The introduction of Imodium Advanced, by McNeil Consumer Products Company, marks a breakthrough in over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medicines since it is the first and only product to offer relief from both diarrhea and gas symptoms. Ninety million Americans suffer from diarrhea annually and when diarrhea strikes, over 65% also suffer from gas-related symptoms.
Imodium Advanced contains a patented formula combining loperamide, the same active ingredient in Imodium A-D proven for diarrhea relief, and simethicone for the treatment of the cramps, bloating, and pressure that often accompany it. The product will be available without a prescription nationwide, later this year in a chewable tablet form.
"Suffering occasional diarrhea or a bout of traveler's diarrhea while on vacation is quite common and Imodium A-D has long been recognized as a first-line solution," said Arnon Lambroza, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Cornell University Medical College. Imodium Advanced was supported by two well-controlled clinical trials. Both compared Imodium Advanced to loperamide alone, simethicone alone, and placebo, demonstrating the outstanding efficacy of Imodium Advanced in the combined relief of diarrhea and gas symptoms.
