NEW YORK, NY -- July 16, 1998 – The Health Ministry of the Russian Federation has approved ICN Pharmaceuticals. Inc.'s 7.5% Virazole(R) (ribavirin) Cream for the treatment of herpes zoster and herpes genitalis. Virazole Cream is produced by ICN Mexico. It is approved and marketed in Mexico under the name Virazide. Ribavirin is a synthetic nucleoside analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity. ICN, which discovered ribavirin, currently markets the drug as Virazole in a variety of dosage forms for at least one of 10 indications in 44 countries. Virazole currently is sold in the U.S. and the European Union (EU) only for aerosol use for the treatment of hospitalised infants and young children with lower respiratory infection due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
