LONDON, ENGLAND -- Dec. 18, 1998 -- In this week's issue of The Lancet, professor Leif Sourander and colleagues from Turku, Finland, report that oestrogen replacement therapy (HRT or ERT) provides a striking decrease in cardiovascular mortality. The rapidly increasing use of ERT makes the question of its advantages and disadvantages highly pertinent. The investigators examined 7,844 women born between 1923 and 1930 who were screened for breast cancer and followed up from 1987 to 1995. 988 women were current users of ERT. The investigators found that ERT was associated with lower cardiovascular mortality and a decrease in sudden cardiac death. The risk ratio for cardiovascular mortality in current ERT users was 79 percent lower than in women who had never used ERT. The risk of breast cancer in current ERT users was not increased, the researchers say, but the risk of endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the womb) was, at 5.06 (just over five times the risk for women who had never used ERT). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 1999 P\S\L Consulting Group Inc.
