BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -- March 14, 2002 -- The more than 20 million Americans who suffer from athlete's foot have a new weapon in their battle with this condition. Schering-Plough HealthCare Products, Inc. (SPHCP) today unveiled Lotrimin® Ultra™ Antifungal Cream (butenafine hydrochloride 1%) for the treatment of athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm.

"Lotrimin Ultra represents the latest advancement in the treatment of athlete's foot," said Dr. John Clayton, Senior Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, SPHCP. "Approved in the same form and dosage strength as it was Rx, Lotrimin Ultra combines a powerful, advanced formulation with the convenience of a once-a-day dosing regimen to cure athlete's foot," added Dr. Clayton.

Formulated with the active ingredient butenafine hydrochloride 1%, previously available only by prescription under the brand name Mentax®(2), Lotrimin Ultra relieves the itching and burning of athlete's foot between and around the toes and is clinically proven to keep you athlete's foot-free for three months(3).

"Athlete's foot sufferers are as time-starved as everyone today and are looking for ways to simplify their lives(3)," said Steve LaMonte, Senior Vice-President of Marketing, SPHCP. "Lotrimin Ultra offers a prescription-strength formulation that is proven effective at curing athlete's foot when used once-a-day, and it's the only OTC antifungal cream that can make this claim," added Mr. LaMonte.

"For many, the itching, burning and cracking associated with athlete's foot can be a recurring and frustrating problem that is often left untreated," said Dr. Arnold Toback, a New York dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Columbia University. "Lotrimin Ultra is a real advancement because not only is it clinically proven to keep you athlete's foot-free for three months, it also gives consumers the flexibility of choosing their dosing regimen -- either once-a-day for four weeks or twice a day for one week" added Dr. Toback.

Heredity, stress, improper foot hygiene, sweat or constricting shoes can contribute to athlete's foot (tinea pedis). It is a highly contagious fungal infection and if left untreated can spread to other parts of the body causing fungal nail (onychomycosis)(4), jock itch (tinea cruris) or ringworm (tinea corporis).

Recent data reveals that 33 percent of athlete's foot sufferers are still not treating this condition and 48 percent of current treaters are not very satisfied.(3) Lotrimin Ultra may offer a solution to both non-treaters and dissatisfied treaters alike since, as Dr. Toback notes, "Butenafine hydrochloride actually kills the organisms that produce fungal growth."

The fungus thrives in warm moist places, such as locker room and shower floors, towels and clothing. Some useful tips for preventing Athlete's Foot and other fungal infections include:

* Bathe or shower daily with warm water and soap. Be sure to dry off completely, including between the toes.

* Do not use the same towel to dry both infected and non-infected areas.

* Do not share clothing or towels that may have come into contact with infected skin.

* Wear flip-flops or shower shoes in bathrooms, locker rooms and shower areas.

* Wear clean, dry and absorbent socks and breathable footwear.

* Wear well-fitting shoes and change them at least once a day.

* Disinfect the bathtub or shower frequently.

* Wash clothing and towels with detergent, bleach and hot water.

Butenafine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Lotrimin Ultra, is manufactured under a licensing agreement with Mylan Laboratories and is marketed by Schering-Plough HealthCare Products, Inc.
