ORLANDO, FL -- July 21, 1999 -- One tablet of AstraZeneca PLC's Zomig(R) (zolmitriptan) 2.5 mg may be consistently effective for the treatment of migraine headaches no matter what time of day they occur, according to data presented last month at the Diamond Headache Clinic's Headache Update '99. To many migraine sufferers, the long-lasting headache relief and reliable duration of action of Zomig mean freedom to enjoy waking, working and relaxing. The data reported are a summary of a retrospective analysis of three randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. The frequency of onset of migraine attacks markedly increased during waking hours, reaching a peak between 6:00 and 7:00 in the morning, just as migraine sufferers prepare for their busy days. For migraine attacks with an onset between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 am, Zomig provided headache relief for a median duration of 23 hours for migraineurs who responded at two hours post-dose compared with eight hours for placebo. "Waking up with the signs that a migraine attack is on its way can be extremely debilitating to migraineurs," said Roger Cady, MD, of the Headache Care Center in Springfield, MO. "Knowing they have therapies like Zomig can provide relief and allow them to get on with their other plans -- whether it's work or time with the family." In addition, the data showed that two-hour headache response rates with zolmitriptan 2.5 mg were consistently high (58 to 61 percent) for migraine headaches with onset during different times of the day compared with placebo (22 to 39 percent). Zomig is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Zomig is contraindicated for patients with uncontrolled hypertension, ischemic heart disease or other significant underlying heart disease. Patients who have risk factors for heart disease should be fully evaluated by their physician prior to initiation of therapy with Zomig. In addition, Zomig should not be administered to patients who are hypersensitive to zolmitriptan or any of the inactive ingredients of Zomig Tablets. Zomig should only be used where a clear diagnosis of migraine has been established. As with other serotonin agonists, sensations of tightness, pain, pressure and heaviness have been reported after treatment with Zomig tablets in different regions of the body, including the chest. In clinical studies of more than 8,300 patients treating more than 87,000 attacks, Zomig was well tolerated.
