VIENNA, AUSTRIA -- September 16, 1999 -- Combining hormonal therapy with standard radiation treatment can successfully combat advanced forms of prostate cancer, according to a new study. Undertaken by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), the study was reported to the 10th European Conference on Clinical Oncology (ECCO), in Vienna, Austria.
The five-year study involved more than 400 patients with advanced prostate cancer. The patients received a combination of radiotherapy plus 36 monthly injections of goserelin acetate (Zoladex), boosted survival rates to 78 percent, compared with 62 percent from radiotherapy alone.
These findings could transform the way prostate cancer is treated, said Professor Michel Bolla, president of the EORTC radiotherapy group. "This cancer kills thousands of men and there are more cases every year, but this new treatment could save thousands of lives," he added.
Goserelin acetate inhibits the production of the male sex hormone testosterone, which stimulates the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 1999 P\S\L Consulting Group Inc.
