RIDGEFIELD, Conn., Sept. 24, 1996 -- As the winter cold season fast approaches, good news is here for sufferers of a runny nose. Atrovent(R) (ipratropium bromide) Nasal Spray .06% is available as the first medicine in a class of nasal sprays to relieve runny noses (rhinorrhea) associated with the common cold quickly and safely. Atrovent Nasal Spray .06% is unique because it is a type of medicine that actually blocks a chemical in the brain which stimulates the glands in the nose to run. Atrovent Nasal Spray .06% is not a decongestant or an antihistamine, is not addictive, and has been shown to have no interaction with other cold medications. It is not indicated for the treatment of sneezing or nasal congestion. According to Dr. Diane Schuller, Professor and Chief of the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Pulmonology at Hershey Medical Center, "Atrovent Nasal Spray is an important development in our treatment of runny nose for cold sufferers. The spray acts to block the runny nose associated with the common cold with virtually no side effects, except occasional nasal dryness and nasal bleeding in less than 10 percent of patients." According to the American Academy for Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAI), 34 million physician visits per year are due to the common cold. Additionally, 40 children out of 100 will miss school days and 16 adults out of 100 will miss work days due to the common cold(A). While there are other cold medications available, only Atrovent Nasal Spray .06% is specifically indicated to relieve the runny nose in patients age 12 and over.
