WALTHAM, Mass.—Nov. 19, 1996 -- Hemagen Diagnostics Inc. (NASDAQ:HMGN) today reported it has received FDA clearance to market an assay for the detection of rheumatoid arthritis, the most prevalent autoimmune disease. Dr. Carl Franzblau, president of Hemagen, said the rheumatoid factor (RF) test is in the increasingly popular enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) configuration which the company is using for many of the new assays it is developing. Hemagen also markets a rheumatoid factor test in the hemagglutination format. ELISA tests, which are often performed on automated or semi-automated analyzers, are typically used in mid-size and large laboratories, while hemagglutination tests, which do not require instrumentation, are often run in smaller laboratories. Franzblau said the availability of rheumatoid factor tests in both technologies gives Hemagen access to all segments of the clinical laboratory marketplace for this important assay. Hemagen markets a broad range of autoimmune tests in ELISA and hemagglutination formats. The assays are used to aid in the diagnosis of such diseases as lupus, Sjogren's syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease, scleroderma and polymyositis.
