By Martin Goldman Special to DG News THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS -- June 11, 1999 -- Results of a Canadian cystic fibrosis study show that Tobi (tobramycin solution for inhalation) can save $4,055 CDN per patient in a 24-week period compared to patients who are not receiving nebulised antibiotics. Dr. Jacques LeLorier, of the University of Montreal, performed a pharmacoeconomic evaluation of a study by Dr. Ramsey, University of Washington. Dr. LeLorier calculated cost savings by looking at days of admission to hospital. Data from the outcome of the multi-centre study was compared to a control group of cystic fibrosis patients in Ontario and Quebec. Patient economic data were obtained from Statistics Canada and the Ontario and Quebec Health Ministries. Two hundred sixty-two patients from the Tobi study were compared with 315 patients from Quebec and 369 from Ontario. The researcher estimated an average cost savings of $4,055 CDN in direct medical admission costs during the 24-week period of the Tobi trial compared to the control group, who were not receiving known nebulised antibiotics. These data can only be applicable in Canada, Dr. LeLorier explained, as it is certain that European patients (and those in some other countries) will receive antibiotics by nebulisation, such as colistin, which is not used in the Americas. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 1999 P\S\L Consulting Group Inc.
