MADISON, N.J., Jan. 14, 1997 -- Schering-Plough Corporation (NYSE: SGP) today issued the following statement in response to recent news reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending removal from the market of Seldane (terfenadine) and Seldane-D as well as generic versions of the drug because of on-going cardiovascular safety concerns. The FDA also is recommending that patients taking Seldane consult their physicians for alternative treatment options.

In seeking treatment options, Schering-Plough strongly believes that physicians and allergy sufferers should consider CLARITIN(R) (loratadine), the leading nonsedating prescription antihistamine in the United States and the world, for the following reasons:

-- CLARITIN has a proven history of safety and efficacy that includes more than 3 billion patient days of use.

-- For seasonal allergic rhinitis sufferers, CLARITIN provides rapid-acting relief that lasts for a full 24 hours.

-- CLARITIN is the only once-a-day nonsedating antihistamine sold in the United States that does not carry a black box warning.

-- The CLARITIN product line offers more treatment options than any other prescription antihistamine available.

-- The CLARITIN line includes: CLARITIN(R), a once-daily nonsedating antihistamine; CLARITIN(R)-D 24 Hour; a once-daily version with a decongestant -- the first and only prescription medication that provides 24 hours of complete symptom coverage in a single tablet; CLARITIN(R)-D 12 Hour, a twice-daily version with a decongestant; and CLARITIN(R) Syrup, the first and only nonsedating antihistamine for children age 6 and above. In December 1996, U.S. marketing clearance was received for CLARITIN(R) RediTabs(TM), the first and only nondrowsy allergy product in a ready-to-take, rapidly disintegrating tablet.

-- The CLARITIN brand is reimbursed by more than 93 percent of managed care plans.

Schering-Plough is a research-based company engaged in the discovery, development, manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceutical and health care products worldwide.
