SAN FRANCISCO-- July 3, 1996 -- Arthritis is not just a disease of older people.

Some 285,000 American children -- from toddlers to teenagers -- suffer with daily arthritis pain.

If a child avoids using a particular limb, shows signs of stiffness or complains about aching joints, it may be more than "growing pains" -- it may be arthritis. The disorder commonly causes pain, swelling, and limited motion in one or more joints, as well as inflammation in other parts of the body, such as the eye.

More than 700 children and families affected by juvenile arthritis, or JA, will gather in the Bay Area over this Fourth of July holiday for a national conference on coping with the disease.

Conference co-chair is Helen Emery, MD, UCSF associate clinical professor of pediatrics who specializes in treating children with JA.

MEDIA ARE INVITED TO COVER:

American Juvenile Arthritis Organization National Conference July 5-7 (Friday & Saturday: 9 am-5 pm/Sunday: 9 am to Noon) San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel 1800 Old Bayshore Highway, Burlingame

"With proper diagnosis and treatment, children with JA can lead active, normal lives," says Emery. "A conference like this informs patients about the disease, its management, and available support resources and also provides an opportunity for patients and families to network with others about coping with JA."

Health care professionals, parents, and children will be available for interviews at the conference. Focusing on the theme of building self-esteem, the event will feature sessions on new arthritis research and treatments, nutrition, overcoming denial, starting a support group, and special challenges involving school and jobs.

(Media contact at the conference is Kathy Downs of the Arthritis Foundation. Marriott Hotel phone number is 415/692-9100.)
