ATLANTA, July 10, 1996-- UCB Pharma, Inc., has met the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements to market Lortab 10/500 CIII (Hydrocodone* Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets, USP, 10mg/500mg, *Warning: May be habit forming).

The new addition to the Lortab brand line of prescription analgesics offers patients the first 10 mg hydrocodone combination formulated to maximize therapeutic flexibility and minimize the potential for acetaminophen (APAP) toxicity, which is becoming a growing concern.

The Lortab 10/500 APAP content is lower than any other 10 mg hydrocodone combination now available. Taken every 4-6 hours, the new tablet does not exceed the generally recommended maximum acetaminophen dose of 4000 mg/day.

Like other products in the widely prescribed Lortab brand line, Lortab 10/500 provides analgesic relief in minutes that lasts for hours, with onset of action in 10-30 minutes, duration from 4-6 hours. It also offers physicians and their patients the convenience of telephone prescribing and refills. The toleration profile is similar to other narcotic analgesics, with lightheadedness and sedation among the most frequently reported adverse effects.

Lortab 10/500 also allows physicians to offer today's cost-conscious patients added relief without added expense -- average wholesale price is the same for Lortab 10/500 and Lortab 7.5/500 (Hydrocodone* Bitartrate and Acetaminophen Tablets, USP, 7.5 mg/500mg, * Warning: May be habit forming).

The new product is being introduced to oncologists, oral surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and family practitioners nationwide by UCB Pharma's 250-member sales force. UCB Pharma, Inc., is the U.S. division of Belgian-based UCB Pharma, a multinational leader with over $600 million in annual pharmaceutical sales. The U.S. operation began with UCB's acquisition of Whitby Pharmaceuticals in 1994.
