PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 23, 1996 -- Paxil (NYSE: SBE and SBH) announced today that Paxil(TM) (paroxetine HCL), its antidepressant, is being added to the formulary of Medi-Cal, the Medicaid program of the State of California, and the largest state Medicaid program in the United States. California joins many other major healthcare decision makers who have placed selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on their formulary and selected Paxil as a preferred agent. Paxil is the fastest growing of the three leading products in the category of SSRIs. Results from clinical trials demonstrate that Paxil safely relieves the symptoms of depression in a wide range of depressed patients, including the moderately to severely depressed, the elderly, and patients whose depressions were accompanied by symptoms of anxiety. The dose regimen for Paxil is well-defined with a recommended starting dose for most patients of 20 mg taken once-a-day. "We are pleased that Medi-Cal will make Paxil available to the 5.5 million people eligible for the program," said Dr. Jerry Karabelas, president, Paxil Pharmaceuticals-North America. "The decision represents not only an opportunity for Paxil, but also a welcome commitment by the State to provide its citizens with the best available new therapies for a debilitating illness." Paxil -- one of the world's leading healthcare companies -- discovers, develops, manufactures, and markets pharmaceuticals, vaccines, over-the-counter medicines, and health-related consumer products, and provides healthcare services including clinical laboratory testing, disease management, and pharmaceutical benefit management.
