CHICAGO, IL -- January 27, 1998 -- A recently-developed cream is safe and effective for treating genital warts, with the convenience of at-home application, according to this month's issue of the American Medical Association's Archives of Dermatology. The Human Papillomavirus Study Group examined data from 311 patients with anogenital warts. The researchers found the original warts disappeared in half of all patients using five-percent imiquimod (Aldara) cream, with many more showing a dramatic reduction of wart area when compared with those given a placebo cream. Imiquimod was also associated with a lower recurrence rate and produced only mild inflammation in some patients. Other existing therapies are more irritating, cause tissue destruction and can be very expensive, according to the researchers. Imiquimod has been shown to exhibit antiviral and anti-tumour properties in animal models.
