Biprel is the only combination anti-hypertensive offering the benefits of both Coversyl® and Lozide®. In a recent multi-center, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study, Biprel was shown to be equally as effective as the combination of enalapril 20mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg with reductions of diastolic blood pressure of -13.1 mmHg and -14.2mmHg respectively.(2) ACE Inhibitors and Diuretics Despite what some Canadians may think, high blood pressure gives almost no warnings. In fact, close to half the people who have it don't know they do. When high blood pressure is left untreated, it can lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. ACE inhibitors belong to a family of drugs known as "vasodilators". Vasodilators help the blood vessels to relax and dilate (open up). By relaxing the blood vessels, ACE inhibitors reduce blood pressure and decrease the effort and workload of the heart. Diuretics (commonly known as "water pills") work on the kidneys to produce more urine. By decreasing water and salt in the body, they lower blood pressure and help reduce the workload on the heart.
