ROCHESTER, MINN. -- August 13, 1997 -- Overeating as a result of food cravings isn't a problem for most women, according to the August issue of Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource. Indulging once in a while won't hurt unless you're trying to lose weight, have diabetes, an eating disorder such as bulimia or tend to overeat when you're down or stressed, the newsletter states.

Up to 97 percent of women crave specific foods on a regular basis, not just when they're pregnant or premenstrual. The most-craved food is chocolate, but food urges can be for anything from salty potato chips to pineapple pizza. Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource suggests the following guidelines for feeding your food cravings without guilt:

-- Set limits. Plan ahead to satisfy your craving, but limit yourself to one or two pieces of chocolate, one serving of ice cream or one cookie.

-- Make it special. If you're only going to have one piece of chocolate or one cookie occasionally, buy the best you can find. You'll satisfy your craving and pamper yourself at the same time.

-- Experiment. Test low-fat, lower calorie versions of your favorite foods to see if they satisfy your craving.

-- Wait it out. Try to distract yourself until the craving passes (and it will). Take a walk, call a friend, read a magazine or write a letter.

-- Eat enough of a healthy diet. If you're not taking in enough calories to meet your energy needs, you may succumb to temptation. Very low-calorie diets, meal-skipping and fasting can trigger food cravings and lead to bingeing.
