SALT LAKE CITY -- March 6, 1997--The fear of pain associated with shots and IVs may be a thing of the past for parents and children. A recently released needle-free method for delivering anesthesia can help alleviate pain associated with local dermal procedures. Created by IOMED Inc. of Salt Lake City, Numby Stuff(TM) can deliver rapid topical anesthesia directly to the skin prior to painful procedures such as IV catheter starts, injections and blood draws. This non-invasive, needle-free process is effective within 7-10 minutes, and reaches a depth of 10 millimeters. Other methods of inducing local anesthesia typically require a needle injection or waiting an hour or more after topical application. Numby Stuff is comprised of IOMED's proprietary Phoresor(R) iontophoretic drug delivery technology, IONTOCAINE(TM) (IOMED's brand of lidocaine HCI 2% with epinephrine 1:100,000 Topical Solution) and Numby Stuff drug delivery electrodes. IOMED's Phoresor Iontophoretic Drug Delivery System and its related Numby Stuff drug delivery electrodes have been recognized as the sole iontophoretic drug delivery system to receive the Seal of Acceptance from the Alliance of Children's Hospitals Inc. The Seal is a nationally recognized sign of pediatric product excellence. "Numby Stuff is a breakthrough for the medical community, as emergency department physicians and pediatricians can now apply topical anesthesia in a quick and effective manner," said William T. Zempsky, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University and attending physician at Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. "The application process is virtually painless for the patient and safer for the medical staff." This exciting, new and effective method delivers anesthetic medication to the target tissue via iontophoresis, an active form of transdermal drug delivery. Mild, low level electric current is used to rapidly transport drug molecules into the skin painlessly. As well as being clinically effective, Numby Stuff is also packaged in a friendly kit with bright colors and fun graphics that encourages pediatric patient involvement and is designed to minimize patient anxiety. "Other methods of inducing local anesthesia typically require a needle injection or waiting an hour or more after topical application; Numby Stuff is different," said Ned M. Weinshenker, IOMED president and chief executive officer. "Numby Stuff provides a simple, unintimidating yet effective procedure that overrides the fear and anxiety patients might face when confronted with needle sticks and similar invasive procedures." IONTOCAINE (IOMED's brand of lidocaine HCI 2% with epinephrine 1:100,000 Topical Solution) is manufactured for IOMED by Abbott Laboratories. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 1999 P\S\L Consulting Group Inc.
