By Martha Kerr, BSN BOSTON -- September 24, 2008 -- Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) using balloon brachytherapy for 1 week is as effective for prevention of recurrence in early-stage breast cancer as a standard 6- to 7-week course of whole-breast irradiation, investigators reported here at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) 50th Annual Meeting. In the American Society of Breast Surgeons' MammoSite Radiation Therapy System (RTS) Registry Trial, Peter D. Beitsch, MD, Medical City Dallas Hospital, Dallas, Texas, and colleagues evaluated data from 1,449 primary early-stage breast tumours who were treated with balloon brachytherapy using the MammoSite RTS. In a presentation on September 22, Dr. Beitsch reported findings on 400 women who were followed for nearly 4 years. His team found that women treated with APBI using balloon brachytherapy "had essentially the same cancer recurrence rates" as those that received standard radiation treatment. Four-year actuarial survival was 93.9%, disease-free survival was 88.9%, and cancer-specific survival was 100.0%, Dr. Beitsch reported. The results with 1 week of balloon brachytherapy may "actually increase the rate of breast conservation," he said, because standard radiation treatment, consisting of 6 or more weeks of treatment, after lumpectomy may not be possible for some women.
