MONT SAINT-HILAIRE, QC -- April 18, 2001 -- Axcan Phama Inc. announced it has commenced marketing of Canasa 500 mg mesalamine (5-ASA) rectal suppositories in the United States. These suppositories, indicated for the treatment of active ulcerative proctitis, are marketed through Axcan's own specialized sales and marketing organization comprised of 77 field sales representatives in the United States. The total market for mesalamine suppositories was approximately US$22 million in fiscal 1999.

"This is great news for patients suffering from active ulcerative proctitis since these suppositories could induce a rapid remission of their disease and an improved quality of life," commented Léon F. Gosselin, Axcan's President and CEO. "We are confident in our ability to serve a large portion of patients treated with mesalamine since this product fits perfectly into our gastroenterology expertise," he concluded.

Since August 1999, at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, Axcan has been selling these suppositories in the United States under a temporary, emergency measure due to the lack of any other source of supply. Subsequently, Axcan successfully accelerated completion of preclinical and clinical studies and then filed an NDA on April 28, 2000, which review was expedited and led to approval on January 4, 2001.
