COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Oct. 20, 1995 -- Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc. (NYSE: RPR) announced today that Kestine(TM) (ebastine), a new antihistamine that acts without causing drowsiness, has been approved for marketing in Denmark for use in the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, and idiopathic chronic urticaria, an allergic skin condition of unknown origin resulting in large edema rings on the skin surface.

Kestine(TM) was previously approved in Sweden and Finland.

More than 250,000 people each year in Denmark are believed to suffer from allergic rhinitis, a condition that is caused by allergens that are present at specific times of the year, such as tree or weed pollens. Perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens that are in the environment all year, such as dust mites, mold, mildew or animal dander. The condition causes nasal itch, congestion, a runny nose and sneezing, as well as ocular symptoms such as watery eyes.

Chronic urticaria begins with an itching sensation on the skin, followed by rings on the affected skin area called weals, characterized by fluid filled circles, hives and skin lesions.

Dosing flexibility is one advantage of Kestine(TM), allowing for titration to a patient's needs from 10 mg to 20 mg once per day. Most other drugs in this class are not indicated to be used above 10 mg per day, and will cause extreme drowsiness if more than the recommended dose is used. With its non-sedative profile, Kestine(TM) will not induce the drowsiness that can be caused by other antihistamines on the market in Denmark, and can be used up to 20 mg per day if the patient's allergic reactions are severe and require higher dosing.

Tomas Gloveus, General Manager of RPR A/S Denmark, said, "RPR Denmark is pleased to be one of the first markets to receive approval for Kestine(TM), and we expect to launch this selective, non-sedating antihistamine product in the first quarter of 1996."

Rhone-Poulenc Rorer is a global pharmaceutical company dedicated to improving human health.
