LONDON, May 16, 1997 -- SmithKline Beecham's antiviral drug Famvir(famciclovir) has been approved for use in the suppression of recurrent genital herpes (herpes simplex) in the United Kingdom. This is the first market to launch Famvir for this condition anywhere in the world. Famvir was previously approved in the UK for the treatment of shingles (herpes zoster) and genital herpes. In the United States Famvir is indicated for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes and shingles in immunocompetent individuals. It is under review in the U.S. for suppression of recurrent genital herpes.
