The corneal epithelial barrier function appears to remain intact following administration of topical latanoprost for glaucoma. Researchers at the Kyoto Prerfectural University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan, evaluated the influence of topically administered latanoprost on corneal epithelial barrier function in 10 patients with no prior topical antiglaucoma medication and 14 patients already receiving medication. The 10 treatment-naïve patients received topical latanoprost (0.005%) once daily for 30 days, while the 14 patients receiving combination therapy were given the same dose once daily for 180 days. Corneal epithelial barrier function was measured before and after treatment in each group with a fluorophotometric technique. The mean fluorescein uptakes in the monotherapy group were 54.6 ng/ml and 57.1 ng/ml before and 30 days after treatment, respectively (p = 0.81). In the combination group, the mean uptakes were 101.0 ng/ml before treatment, 118.9 ng/ml after 30 days of treatment (p = 0.38) and 93.4 ng/ml (p = 0.58) after 180 of treatment.
