Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology 2002;15:434-441. "A Multicenter Randomized Trial of Ketoconazole 2% and Zinc Pyrithione 1% Shampoos in Severe Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis" 01/13/2003 01:40:28 PM By Robert Short Ketoconazole 2% shampoo is significantly better in treating severe dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp than is zinc pyrithione 1% shampoo. Professor Caludine Piérard-Franchimont of the Department of Dermatopathology, University Medical Centre Sart Tilman, Liège, Belgium, and colleagues came to this conclusion in their open randomised study of 331 or 343 subjects initially recruited. One hundred and seventy one patients were randomized to ketoconazole 2% shampoo and 160 to zinc pyrithione 1% shampoo. The researchers said, "Beneficial effects were evidenced for both medicated shampoos, but the effect was significantly better for ketoconazole 2%, which achieved a 73% improvement in the total dandruff severity score compared with 67% for zinc pyrithione 1% at week four." In addition, it was found that the recurrence rate of the disease was significantly lower in the group receiving ketoconazole than in the group receiving zinc pyrithione. The difference was noticed by the patients and both shampoos were well tolerated. |
