Title: FDA Approves Reyataz (Atazanavir Sulfate), Once-Daily Protease Inhibitor for Treatment Of HIV/AIDS
"FDA Approves Reyataz (Atazanavir Sulfate), Once-Daily Protease Inhibitor for Treatment Of HIV/AIDS"

NEW YORK, NY -- June 23, 2003 -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has just approved a new treatment for HIV/AIDS that may simplify a patient's drug regimen. Reyataz™ (atazanavir sulfate) is the newest member of a powerful class of HIV drugs called protease inhibitors. The new medication offers HIV patients the convenience of once-daily dosing -- making treatment regimens simpler, and may improve adherence. Some protease inhibitors have been associated with increased cholesterol levels -- a concern among HIV patients. In clinical trials, Reyataz did not significantly increase total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Another benefit of Reyataz is its potential to preserve future treatment options for some patients as they move on to new regimens. For the 42 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, the simplified treatment may be a welcomed convenience. SOURCE: Bristol-Myers Squibb
