"FDA Approves Abilify (Aripiprazole) for Treatment of Acute Bipolar Mania, Including Manic and Mixed Episodes"

NEW YORK, NY -- October 4, 2004 -- The FDA has approved Abilify® (aripiprazole), for the treatment of acute bipolar mania, including manic and mixed episodes in patients with bipolar disorder. More than 2 million Americans suffer from bipolar I disorder, a condition that causes extreme mood changes alternating between episodes of mania (highs), when the person's mood is elated and judgment impaired, and depression (lows), when the person may feel hopeless and believe they cannot be helped. For bipolar I disorder, medicine plays a key role in helping manage symptoms. However, taking medicine as prescribed can be difficult. Because patients vary in their response to medication, it is important to have several treatment options available to help healthcare providers find an optimal treatment plan for each patient.
