"Moderate Exercise Reduces Risk of Colon Cancer Recurrence: Presented at ASCO " By Charlene Laino ORLANDO, FL -- May 20, 2005 -- Regular exercise can improve disease-free survival rates in patients with stage III colon cancer, results of a prospective study suggest. Jeffrey A. Meyerhardt, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School, and medical oncologist, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, reported the finding here on May 18[th at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting (ASCO). Patients in the study were significantly less likely to die or have disease recurrence if they exercised the equivalent of a brisk, 1-hour walk 6 times a week, compared with those who had little or no exercise, Dr. Meyerhardt said. |
