"Atomoxetine and Methylphenidate Appear Equal in Clinical Efficacy for Children With ADHD: Presented at ECNP" By Mark Pownall AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS -- October 27, 2005 -- The attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatments methylphenidate and atomoxetine have similar effects in reducing symptoms of the condition in children, according to a head-to-head study. Both treatments achieved clinically meaningful and statistically significant improvements in symptoms associated with ADHD, including inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity in children with a mean age of less than 10 years, the researchers said during a presentation here at the 18[th Congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) on October 24th. The study was conducted in Mexico, China, and Korea, and randomized 164 children to atomoxetine and 166 to methylphenidate. Response was defined as 40% or greater reduction in total score on the Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale IV - Parent Version: Investigator Administered and Scored (ADHDRS-IV-Parent:Inv) scale. |
