"Quetiapine Treats Bipolar Depression without Inducing Manic or Hypomanic Episodes: Presented at CPA" By Steve Pridgeon VANCOUVER, CANADA -- November 10, 2005 -- Bipolar depression can be treated with adjunctive quetiapine, without inducing manic or hypomanic episodes, according to research presented here at the 55[th annual conference of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA). The treatment of the depressive phase in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) is very difficult, said Roumen Milev, MD, Associate Professor and Chair, Division of Adult Treatment and Rehabilitation Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Antidepressant therapy alone significantly increases the risk of triggering a manic or hypomanic episode, he added. |
