BERLIN, GERMANY -- May 10, 2006 -- Schering AG, Germany, announced today the successful completion of the European Mutual Recognition Procedure (MRP) for Yasminelle®, a new low dose oral contraceptive with Schering AG's unique progestin, drospirenone. The MRP is the official basis for marketing medical products in all European Union markets. Until the end of the year, Yasminelle will be launched in major European countries. In Switzerland, the product has already been available since May 1, 2006. "We are delighted to offering European women our new contraceptive, Yasminelle a major addition for our Yasmin® product family. This is good news for women who want a low dose oral contraceptive and expect more than just reliable contraception," said Philip Smits, M.D., Head of Gynecology&Andrology at Schering AG. "Yasminelle, with its unique progestin, drospirenone, alleviates some of the discomfort associated with menstruation. Drospirenone works by reducing the negative impact of estrogen-related fluid retention, which can lead to weight gain, bloating or breast tenderness." The new product contains 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 3 milligrams drospirenone in a 21-day active pill intake regimen. Yasminelle provides a new option for physicians to prescribe a low dose oral contraceptive with benefits similar to Schering's Yasmin (e.g., due to the antiandrogenic properties of drospirenone, Yasminelle affects the skin positively). Schering received the first European approval for Yasminelle in August 2005 in the Netherlands, which served as the reference member state for the MRP. Additional information Every modern oral contraceptive provides reliable contraception. The key difference between birth control pills lies in the additional benefits of the active ingredients. The active ingredient that triggers the positive effects of Yasminelle is called drospirenone, the only synthetic progestogen with a close similarity to progesterone, the female body's own natural hormone. This hormone possesses unique characteristics, as it reduces estrogen related water retention. Drospirenone is also contained in Yasmin.
