"Kidney Stones Risk Increases After Bariatric Surgery Procedures: Presented at ASN" By Ed Susman SAN DIEGO, CA -- November 20, 2006 -- The formation of kidney stones and the risk of stones appears to be increased in patients who undergo bariatric surgery for morbid obesity, researchers said here at the 39[th annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). "We aren't exactly sure what is causing the increase in stone formation or creating the environment for the stones to form, but we believe it is part of the process of malabsorption of nutrients that results from the most common surgical procedure, the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass," explained researcher John Lieske, MD, professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota. |
