"HIV-Positive Patients Show Early Changes in Brain Metabolism: Presented at CROI" By Norra MacReady LOS ANGELES, CA -- March 6, 2007 -- HIV-positive patients show changes in cerebral metabolism that may reflect ongoing inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, even in the absence of any clinical signs, investigators reported here at the 14[th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI). These changes were observed in people who were not neuropsychologically impaired. Most of the subjects (75%) had an undetectable viral load, and the differences did not correlate with any known markers of HIV disease, according to researchers led by Beau Ances, MD, PhD, clinical instructor and NeuroAIDS fellow, HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center, University of California, San Diego, United States. |
