"Adjuvant Radiation Therapy Improves Survival Among Patients With Head and Neck Cancer" NEW YORK -- June 11, 2008 -- Adding radiation therapy after surgery significantly improves overall survival in patients diagnosed with node-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma when compared with surgery alone, according to a study in the June issue of the [International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics. The impact of radiation therapy on survival for various subgroups of node-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma has not been clearly demonstrated. Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Departments of Radiation Oncology, Otolaryngology, and Head and Neck Surgery, New York, New York, sought to determine the impact of radiation and surgery on overall survival among patients with head and neck cancer. |
