"Pioglitazone Hydrochloride Approved as Concomitant Therapy With Biguanides for Type 2 Diabetes in Japan" NEW YORK -- December 22, 2008 -- An additional indication of concomitant therapy with biguanides has been approved for pioglitazone hydrochloride (Actos) by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare in Japan, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The approval is based on a randomised, double-blind, comparative study, in which the clinical usefulness of biguanides monotherapy was compared with that of biguanides plus pioglitazone hydrochloride. Patients receiving biguanides plus pioglitazone hydrochloride showed a statistically significant difference in improving HbA1C without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia. Management of type 2 diabetes should also include nutritional counselling, weight reduction as needed, and exercise. SOURCE: Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited |
