      Summary points:A 23-year-old with beta-thalassaemia intermedia presents for evaluation of a posterior mediastinal mass on chest X-ray, as well as a 3-month history of dyspnoea on effort and chest pain. This case report describes the diagnostic investigations and provides various images. The authors discuss the causes of extramedullary haematopoiesis, commonly involved organs, and clinical and radiological manifestations.
