news Abdominal Pain Due to a Lost Guidewire: A Case Report

Presented by:Cases Journal / Reza Taslimi, Saeed Safari, Alireza Kazemeini, Ali Aminian, Ehsan Joneidi and Farnoosh Larti
Summary points:A 28-year-old Iranian white man with heroin addiction and active hepatitis B presents to the emergency department with a 4-day history of abdominal pain, jaundice, and fever. Physical examination, abdominal x-rays, ultrasound examination, laboratory data, and urine analysis are described. A femoral catheter is inserted for dialysis following diagnosis of acute renal failure. Abdominal pain recurred and new radiographic studies revealed a metallic guidewire used for inserting haemodialysis catheter. The authors provide tips regarding insertion of a central venous catheter to help prevent this mortal complication or at least, in rapid diagnosis of its loss.
