news Challenging Complications of Treatment - Human Herpes Virus 6 Encephalitis and Pneumonitis in a Patient Undergoing Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation for Relapsed Hodgkin's Disease: A Case Report

Presented by:Virology Journal / Martin Bommer, Sandra Pauls and Jochen Greiner
Summary points:A 28-year-old male is admitted to a hospital with relapsed Hodgkin's disease. He received Dexa-BEAM with stem cell harvest but developed mental disturbance and convulsive status on day 12 after stem cell reinfusion. First magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), lumbar puncture, cell count of the cerebrospinal fluid, polymerase chain reaction test, computed tomography-scan of the chest, bronchoalveolar lavage, and second MRI are described. The authors discuss an extremely uncommon infectious complication in a patient with relapsed Hodgkin's disease and recommend HHV-6 detection to be included into the diagnostic work-up in patients with severe complications of infections after autologous stem cell transplantation or intensive chemotherapeutic treatment.
