        Summary points:A 23-year-old presents with progressive haemorrhagic shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome after receiving multiple blood transfusions during complicated thoracic surgery. This case report describes the patient's history, laboratory findings, diagnosis and outcome. The authors review the diagnostic criteria for sepsis, the selection criteria for blood donors in the Netherlands, and the possible mechanism by which this patient was infected with Yersinia enterocolitica.
