news Rapid Resolution of Nitrofurantoin-Induced Interstitial Lung Disease

Presented by:Archivos de Bronconeumologia / Miguel Ángel Núñez Viejo, Ana Fernández Montes, Javier Velasco Montes, José Javier Gómez-Román, Carmen García Ibarbia and José Luis Hernández Hernández
Summary points:A 48-year-old is admitted for progressively worsening dyspnoea, even on minimal exertion, as well as dry cough, nighttime sweating, asthenia, and a weight loss of 3 kg in the past month. Physical examination, haematological and biochemical parameters, laboratory data, chest radiograph, high resolution computed tomography, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, biopsy, and treatment are described. The authors discuss nitrofurantoin-induced interstitial lung disease and suggest that transbronchial biopsy might be useful for assessing the reversibility of pulmonary lesions associated with nitrofurantoin.
