        Summary points:A 72-year-old presents with repeated exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that did not respond to conventional treatment. This case report describes the history and clinical presentation, findings from various investigations, including bronchoscopy, and response to treatment in hospital. The authors discuss the role of herpes simplex virus in patients with chronic lung disease, especially those with exacerbations of COPD who are not responding to conventional treatment.
